Swim School

A Guide to our Swim School

Our Swim School has been created in partnership with Swim Wales, the National Governing Body for Swimming, and its aim is to provide every child the opportunity to become a competent, confident and safe swimmer by learning a wide range of aquatic skills.

We believe that a fun and engaging environment is the best way for children to learn in, and this is reflected in how our swimming instructors deliver their lessons.

The benefits of our swim school include:

  • Annual programme delivered over 50 weeks of the year

  • Continuous lessons throughout the school holidays

  • Parents/guardians can monitor progress via the GoLearn home portal

  • Electronic certificates are awarded at the end of each Octopus and Waves level

Frequently asked questions …

  • All children should be having fun.  They should be involved in games-based activities to help them learn the core swimming skills such as breathing, submerging and movement in the water.  Swimming strokes will be gradually introduced once the child has learned all the basic core aquatic skills.  Lessons are 30 minutes, and the children will be as active as possible throughout.

  • These skills are the building blocks for learning more complex practices, and they are fundamental skills to your child becoming a competent swimmer. For example, blowing bubbles in the bath/pool is the first stage for aquatic breathing; floating helps a child establish good body position for strokes to be developed and is key to teaching children safety.

It is important that the core aquatic skills are taught well to enable swimmers to advance to more recognised techniques such as swimming the four main strokes.

  • Of course. Our swimming lessons can be adapted as necessary to help all children achieve their potential. If your child has specific needs, let the instructor know on their first lesson.

  • There is no definite timeline, different children take different amounts of time and can find some skills easier than others.  If you were to take your child swimming outside of their lessons there is a high possibility that they will progress more quickly, another alternative would be one to one swimming lessons.

  • An assessment usually takes 10 minutes before your child is assigned a swimming level; this will be booked in at reception before your child’s first lesson.  We also continuously assess the children during their lessons, the teacher will be looking to mark ‘outcomes’, these are skills the children develop that are signed off as soon as they are completed, you will be able to see what these are on the on the home portal of the GoLearn platform.

  • If your child has had sickness and diarrhoea, ear infections, infectious diseases, open wounds or sore eyes, they must wait 48 hours after all symptoms have subsided.

  • Yes, children will learn vital skills such as breathing, submerging and general movement through the water by playing, once they are competent and confident the teacher will then move on to core aquatic skills.

  • Yes, one-to-one lessons are available, and they are a great way to top up your child's lessons.  Speak to our reception team to find out days and times.

  • If there is an issue with your payment, it is possible the payment has been cancelled by your bank and therefore your child would have been removed from the class, we will always try to contact you before this happens, so please ensure your contact details are up to date in order for us to get in touch.

  • This could be for a few reasons.  All children learn at different rates, some may take longer than others.  Attendance could be another issue, if your child has missed a few sessions, this can really affect their learning pace.  You will also notice some of our outcomes are made up of two or more outcomes, these can take longer to complete.

  • It’s best to focus more on the outcome rather than the percentage you see displayed on the Home Portal, this will give you a much better gauge of your child is doing in their swimming lessons and what progress they are making.

  • NA – Not Assesses

    NC – Not Confident

    IMPRO – Improving

    PASS - Pass

  • This is for water safety, to teach your child how to react if they fall into water without goggles.  They will learn how deal with the situation in a calm and relaxed manner, avoiding panic, which can be detrimental to a swimmer in real life and by introducing this in a controlled environment it promotes water safety.

  • The programme works on continuous assessment, our instructors are always watching to see if your child has successfully achieved the outcomes, once this has happened, they will be signed off.

  • No, all our instructors work on the same outcomes, they use the digital platform to see where the children are and continue to work through the outcomes, if the children have competed the outcomes the supply teacher will sign them off.
